Statesboro Bible Baptist Church was borne in the hearts of Pastor C. Gus Groover and a group of faithful believers. On April 3, 1954, The church held its first meeting in a tobacco warehouse on College Street. Shortly after land was purchased and a tent was set up to serve as a temporary meeting place. Our church was erected on Northside Drive East. The church grew in this location for 50 years.
Pastor Groover's passion and love for young people led to seeing many people come to Christ in our church and others, his ministry set the example of the love of God in our church. In 1957, he resigned and went about planting independent baptist churtches in many other areas. He was a giant for God! God was at work building a church!
W.F. "Tommy" Tomkins became our second pastor and quickly won the hearts of our people. He was a dynamic preacher and good for our church. The church continued to grow and became stronger under his ministry; hundreds were saved and came to know Christ during the 25 years of his ministry. God clearly had a purpose for our church!
Then in March of 1982, W. Max Alderman became our third pastor. As a small boy, he was present with his parents on the day the church was founded in 1954, He was gifted in many ways both as a writer and preacher, His ministry and missionary spirit is still impacting many and our church today. Pastor Alderman loved and pastored our church for 27 years; under his leadership, our church saw great things, moved, and built the second church building on Hwy 24 in which we meet today. These pastors all laid a foundation for a church that has fresh vision and passion for Jesus Christ! This brings us To BBC today....
Today is a new day for Statesboro Bible Baptist Church! Pastor Jon Edmisten became our our current pastor in 2009. He has a fresh fervor and zeal which has caused excitment in our church and community. In the short time he has been here, prayer has become the foundation of our ministry, The church's commitment to prayer has resulted in a geniune revival taking place past summer like our church has never seen before! His vision for the church is a city and worldwide vision. God's touch is upon him and this has ignited our church! Come and walk with God! Come worship! We encourage anyone who reads this story to come and join us as we follow God's vision!
